Building our Community
The Steward School offers Variable Tuition for students in JK-12, as well as merit-based grants for Upper School students. We believe a diversity of talents, abilities, and cultures among our student body provides a rich and well-rounded educational experience, and our merit grants and Variable Tuition program support this goal. We never stop working to make Steward as affordable as possible. To learn about our tuition and fees structure, click here.
Curious what your Variable Tuition might be?
Use the calculator below to estimate your family’s Variable Tuition per student by providing answers that most closely resemble your financial picture.
This is only an estimate. Actual Variable Tuition will vary based on more detailed information reviewed during the application process, including your household income, mortgage or rent, assets, consumer debt, investments and savings, and number of children in tuition-paying schools. There is a separate application for Variable Tuition, which can be found here. Final determination is based on this application as well as the remaining budget available for Variable Tuition.
Every family is expected to contribute to the cost of tuition and fees, thereby supporting the community to the extent circumstances permit. Among our families are those who can afford tuition at the top of the range and whose philanthropic generosity provides a vital component of annual operating expenses. There are also families who manage to pay tuition at the highest level only by making substantial sacrifice, those who are able to afford only minimal tuition, and those across the spectrum.
Steward's Variable Tuition program enables greater access to Steward by customizing tuition based on each family's individual financial situation.
We provide more than $2 million annually to reduce tuition each year. This program is designed to help all academically qualified students have access to a Steward education. We understand that families have many financial priorities, and school costs must fit into your budget, today and in years to come.
This is an optional program and only interested families need to apply in order to participate. The process replicates the familiar process of applying for financial aid (Steward offers Variable Tuition instead of what’s traditionally described as financial aid or tuition assistance).
We know that you’re planning for the future, so rest assured that our goal is that the Variable Tuition you receive this year should remain consistent (accounting for annual across-the-board tuition increases) unless your financial circumstances change.
Our team is available to help guide applicant families through the application process. As in everything we do, we strive to treat every family with care and respect for the individual.
Families have the opportunity to inquire about Variable Tuition during the admissions process or at any time during a student’s enrollment at Steward. Variable Tuition amounts are communicated once a student is accepted or prior to reenrollment in February.
A recent survey by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) established that out of all the private schools in Richmond, Steward is a city and statewide leader in offering merit awards.
We are pleased to offer the Debbie Robson Merit Scholarship, which provides four years of full tuition for a rising ninth-grade student who has distinguished themselves academically and in extracurricular areas such as athletics, arts, innovation, or community service. Steward also offers additional merit awards for students who are new to Steward in the Upper School. The awards will be granted based upon character, which is central to the Steward mission, and other factors. For more information about these awards and the application process, click here.
